Jonna L. - "A Life-Changing Minute"

I wiped the sticky sweat off my forehead as I started walking towards my car. Soccer practice was over and now I could get home and take a hot shower. Then I could finally go to bed.

“See you later,” said Emma, as she started walking to her car.

Smiling back I said, “Bye, see you at school tomorrow!”

Hopping into my car, I drove out of the parking lot and onto the road that led to home.

Driving cautiously down the road, I came to an intersection where the light was green, so I went on. Then out of my left eye I saw a white pick-up truck that was carelessly swerving on the road. It also wasn’t going to stop for his red light, and it wasn’t going to stop for me.

I tried stopping by pressing on the breaks hard, but it was too late. The truck crashed right into my driver side door. The truck hit hard and caused my car to flip up side down.

I cried, “God, please be with me,” and then darkness started to surround me.

As I slowly became conscious, I felt a puddle of wetness next to my body. I also tasted the salty taste of blood on my lips.

I tried crying for help, but no sound came out.

I faintly remember two firefighters talking to me as they tried to get me out from underneath my car. Saying words of encouragement and hope.

One of them recited a bible verse but, I didn’t hear the whole thing. The ambulances siren drowned out his voice.

Once they had gotten me out, I noticed that the moisture was all my own blood. I instantly started trembling and I didn’t know what to think or do.

I barely remember the ambulance ride to the hospital.

“Hello,” said my mom as she answered the telephone.

“Hi, this is the Tulare County Police. Is this Mrs. Parker?” he asked.

“Yes, this is,” replied my mom.

“We just wanted to inform you that your daughter was in a car crash 5 minutes ago,” said the police officer.

Putting a hand to her mouth, she started crying and then she asked, “Is she okay?”
“Not the best. She was thrown underneath a car. She is in an ambulance going to the hospital right now. It would be best if you go to the hospital right away!” the officer said.
