Penelop E. - "Letters of a Slave"

Dear my beloved daughter Shaquia,

I know we have been estranged for some time. I haven’t seen you since we were on the slave ship to the Americas, but I hope that our paths will cross sometime before I die. I trust that your master will treat you well here in this unfamiliar land we are in. I know it will be hard for us to be apart for this long of time and I am hoping that your mother is doing fine back home in Africa.

Love from your father,

Ogudovu

Dear my much-loved father,

I realize we have been apart from each other for a very long time and I do hope that we will see each other again. I miss you and I miss your love close to me. But I know that you still do love me with all of your heart even if we are hundreds of miles apart. And I still love you too no matter what happens between us. I will always love you, father. I am hoping to see you sometime in your and my remaining life. My master is treating me well. I hear that mother is doing fine back in our home. Write back.

Your beloved daughter,

Shaquia

Dear my daughter that I love,

I am glad that your master is treating you well in this new world in America. I do love you with all my heart and I could never stop loving you; ever. No matter what happens in life that would affect us both, my love would not stop from getting to you. Whether I am near to you or far from you, I will never stop loving you my cherished daughter. I promise that we will see each other before I go. I promise.

Lots of my love from your father,

Ogudovu

Dear my father I love,

Father, I miss you dearly. I want you near to me but I know it won’t be so for a long while. It seems it has been an eternity since I have seen you last at the slave sell. I wish we were together with my brothers and mother back in Africa. At least they do not have to suffer the hard labor that we do. At least I know that you are doing well. I hope you receive this letter soon. Whether we see each other again or not, my love towards you will not stop!

Your treasured daughter,

Shaquia

-To all the slaves that were mistreated and killed in America: the now land of the free.
