Now I know you might be wondering why I’m writing about technology. The answer is, I was checking out our class blog, and then it hit me! Seeing all my classmates’ writing shows me how different of a person they are when they write. I think that is a wonderful thing, because in writing you can express yourself.
Back in “the day” there were no cell phones, computers, televisions, email, texting, Facebook, Twitter, or iPads. All there was was a piece of plain ol’ paper and a bottle of ink with a feather. Everyone wrote letters to each other, and besides face-to-face talking, the only way you had to communicate were letters.
Browsing the blog made me realize that when you write, you have a chance to truly express yourself and show off who you really are. I can picture your face right now, and I know you’re thinking why is a middle schooler talking down technology? I know, I know… I text, I email, I watch T.V., and I have a cell phone. I’m just as bad as all of you, and I would react the same way about technology as you.
So now you’re wondering when I first realized how caught up this modern society is in technology. Well, I was talking to my co-director about a movie we were working on (oh! They also didn’t have movie cameras back then) and I told her to text me, call me, or email me. Suddenly, I thought to myself, “Wow Dylan! You sure are cool! You have so many ways of contact!” Now I think how sad that must have sounded. Of course I didn’t recognize it, my co-director didn’t recognize it, no one would have recognized it as a very, very sad thing to say.
So a few days later when I decided to check out the class blog. I realized that the one way people can truly express themselves is writing. Not in text talk, email talk, on the phone, or even in person! I loved seeing how everyone writes and who they are in the inside.
Great! I’ve glanced around my room, and I have so much technology in here, my phone charging to my left, my movie camera sitting on my desk, my iPod on my nightstand, my Sonicare toothbrush on my bathroom counter, a CD player, keyboard, and by golly! My laptop that I’m typing this on right now! Boy! I’m not a good influence on all of you, but I’m sure you’re all just as bad as I am.
Ok, ok I admit, I’ve got to work on it! We all do! Technology has taken over the 21st century. We’ve got to figure out what to do. All I know is that we can do one thing, write as much as possible! Way to go Mr. H! You make us write all the time, and now I realize how important it is. Kudos to you!
Now just let me ask one more question: Is technology all we have?
